Houston Wildlife Removal Tip of the Month: How to keep opossums away from your property

Wild animals such as opossums are increasingly moving into human habitat in search of food and hideouts. Finding a place where there is a constant supply of food items around makes them stick around even longer. These animals may not pose an immediate risk to human beings but they can indirectly cause damages. Their droppings can transfer infections and diseases and their dead carcasses are worse. They also like to forage and can create a mess in and around your house aside from actual damage to the house.

There are several ways in which you can keep these animals from living or worse still, nesting in your home. Some of these methods include:

Adequately lighting up your porch and the area around your house. Opossums like to stay in dark places where they can hide and only come out at night. Having lights in these places where they are bound to enter through will make them avoid your home completely
Trimming tree branches so that none of them touch the roof of your house is another method to use. This will prevent the animals from accessing your house by climbing the trees and onto your roof.
Fencing the areas around the porch and under the shed where the opossums are most likely to hide using some kind of metal barrier will keep them out of your property as well. Alternatively you can pack stones or concrete under these places where they could hide to make them impenetrable.
Opossums stay in places where they can get a supply of food and so keeping any food in and around your house well stored in tamper proof material will help drive and keep them away for a long time. This also goes for dustbins. Having them covered tightly every time will prevent the opossums from foraging in them while looking for leftovers.
Feeding your pets from inside the house will also prevent the opossums from coming to eat their food. Opossums love pet food and having feeding bowls littering your compound will attract them to your property
Trimming tall grass around your compound and trimming bushes as well will minimize chances of the opossums hiding in and under them. Without a place to hide the opossums will be driven away and kept away for longer.
Refrain absolutely from feeding opossums. For some reasons some people find baby opossums to be adorable. Well, that only lasts until they are well fed and big and then they are no longer wanted. Feeding the opossums will only keep them on your property to your detriment, avoid it
Place traps strategically around your compound to catch the animals before they get into your space.

Trapping them is the most effective method of removing them from your property without much of a hassle. Use any food for bait and you are guaranteed to catch them.
